The Biggest Mistakes People Make in the Tatra Mountains (and Later Regret)
The Tatras are beautiful. But they can also test you very quickly.
One wrong decision, unsuitable shoes, or a “we’ll manage somehow” attitude… and your romantic mountain getaway suddenly turns into a survival challenge involving rain, hunger, and wet socks.
To help you truly enjoy your holiday, we’ve put together a list of the most common mistakes visitors make in the Tatras. Not to scare you — but because most of them are actually very easy to avoid.
1. “It’s summer!”
…until one hour later you’re standing on Hrebienok in 9°C and fog.
The weather in the Tatras changes faster than the mood of a hungry hiker. Even if it’s sunny and 28°C down in Poprad, up in the mountains it can suddenly become cold, windy, or rainy.
What helps?
- layers of clothing,
- a lightweight waterproof jacket,
- dry socks,
- and a little respect for the mountains 😄
2. New sneakers + hiking = bad idea
Every year it’s the same story. Brand new white sneakers for the holiday… and after 3 kilometers, blisters the size of mountains.
You don’t need professional hiking gear worth hundreds of euros, but proper shoes can absolutely save your day. The Tatras are not a shopping mall — even an “easy walk” can be rocky or slippery.
3. Planning 4 hikes in 2 days
We get it. When you’re in the Tatras, you want to see everything.
But:
- Štrbské Pleso in the morning,
- lunch in a mountain restaurant,
- waterfalls in the afternoon,
- wellness in the evening,
- and “maybe Lomnický Peak tomorrow too”…
…sounds much better at home while planning 😄
The Tatras are best enjoyed more slowly. Leave time for coffee, views, relaxing, and maybe even an afternoon nap.
4. Underestimating hunger
This one is seriously underrated.
Hungry kids = disaster.
Hungry partners = an even bigger disaster 😄
Always carry:
- water,
- a small snack,
- an energy bar,
- fruit,
- or emergency chocolate.
Everything tastes 3× better in the mountains anyway.
5. Thinking bears are waiting behind every tree
Yes, there are bears in the Tatras.
No, you are usually not on their favorite snack list.
Most visitors never see a bear in their entire lives. And if they do, it’s usually from far away — not in some dramatic movie-like situation.
The real dangers are usually:
- underestimated weather,
- exhaustion,
- unsuitable shoes,
- or ego saying “we can still make it.”
6. Treating accommodation as “just a place to sleep”
A lot of people choose accommodation with the mindset: “we’ll only sleep there anyway.”
But after a full day in the mountains, you suddenly realize how amazing it feels to have:
- peace and quiet,
- a comfortable bed,
- a hot shower,
- morning coffee with a mountain view,
- and not feel surrounded by crowds of tourists.
That’s exactly why we love Nová Lesná — peaceful, but still perfectly connected to everything important in the Tatras.
You don’t need to “conquer” the Tatras
You don’t need to perform Olympic-level sports every day. Sometimes it’s enough to:
- take a walk,
- enjoy good food,
- breathe fresh mountain air,
- and simply relax in the evening.
Because that’s what a holiday in the Tatras should really be about ❤️
