Weekend in the High Tatras: What to See and Do in Just Two Days
Planning a quick getaway to the High Tatras and wondering what’s possible in just a weekend? No need to climb Gerlach – even with only two days, you can enjoy stunning views, fresh air, and the unique atmosphere of Slovakia’s most famous mountains. Whether you’re coming as a couple, family or solo, here’s your relaxed yet adventure-packed weekend itinerary.
Day 1: Hrebienok, Waterfalls & a Tasty Lunch
Start your weekend with a scenic ride up to Hrebienok from Starý Smokovec via funicular. From the top, take an easy walk to the Cold Creek Waterfalls and enjoy a short hike through the forest.
➡️ For families: The path is stroller-friendly if you have a sports model.
➡️ For couples: Pack a snack and stop at Reiner’s Shelter – the oldest hut in the Tatras with a charming mountain vibe.
🧡 For the lunch we recommend you baby-friendly restaurants like Koliba Kamzík or IBA.TU Bistro or you can take something sweet at Cukráreň u Elišky!

Day 2: Štrbské Pleso & Lakeside Stroll
On day two, head to the iconic Štrbské Pleso. The easy walking loop around the lake takes about 45 minutes and offers postcard-worthy views. In summer, you can rent a rowboat; in winter, enjoy the snowy silence.
➡️ Extra tip: If you want a longer hike, try the trail to Popradské Pleso – around 1.5 hours each way, with rewarding views.
☕ After your walk, relax on the terrace by the lake, enjoy a coffee or lunch with a view. Or simply sit on a bench, take a deep breath, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
What to pack – even for a short trip:
- Comfortable shoes – even “easy” trails can be rocky
- Layers – weather can change quickly
- Water bottle & snack (or grab a local pastry)
- Your good mood (but don’t worry, the mountains will help with that!)
Stay tip: Nová Lesná
Looking for a quiet, comfortable base with views and easy access to the Tatras? Nová Lesná is perfect – close to Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica, yet peaceful and family-friendly. Great for couples and travelers with kids.
📌 In short
Even a two-day weekend in the Tatras offers a surprising amount of beauty and adventure. Whether you’re hiking, relaxing or exploring, you’ll leave refreshed and probably planning your next visit.
